Chapter 2 : Sambit Chatterjee
Sambit Chatterjee is a 29-year-old percussionist who has steadily established himself as one of the foremost independent musicians playing music across the country. With different avatars for both the indie as well as Indian classical music scene, he is one of the few musicians who have seen as broad of a spectrum of music in the country.
Son of Grammy nominated percussionist Pt. Subhen Chatterjee, with a rich heritage of music to grow up around, Sambit espouses the archetype of the working man’s musician in Mumbai and is optimistic about the present music scene he observs around him
“Tabla theka at 85 bpm”
This concept is exactly how it sounds.
We had Sambit travel all around Mumbai with us – with his set of tabla, a table and the Motiv MV88+ mic – to record a ‘theka’ on the tabla at 85 bpm. We found our spots in busy traffic corners, wide lanes and near the Arabian Sea -and had Sambit travel all the way from Versova beach in the morning, to the David Sassoon Library at Fort to finish at the Horniman Circle in South Mumbai.
All the audio you hear in this story has been recorded live outdoors on the Motiv MV88+, which we found to be a portable, state of the art digital stereo condenser microphone, which (we concur) is equipped to record instruments in high fidelity at any location.
Traditional recorders and phone mics have a strict frequency bass which is either too high or too low, for the varying ambience of the surroundings . With the Motiv MV88+ we could customise this spectrum to the space and direction of the sound.
We managed to record unexpectedly clear and high quality samples despite the ambient noise of traffic and the the city waking up to start the day.
At Instrupad, we’re looking out for tools and techniques to recommend musicians which can enhance and add value to their ‘musicmanship’.
With the Motiv 88+, musicians can now record their sound wherever they go – from solo jams in the solitude of your private balcony at home, to concerts and live performances at public spaces. We’ve been putting the mic through the test, all around the soundscapes of Mumbai ; we highly recommend this mic for all what it promises to deliver.
Follow us for more in the ‘Motiv Stories Mumbai’, as we take you through sounds of Mumbai, with some incredibly talented musicians who journey together with us in our experiments with recording their sound.

PS: The theka at 85 bpm. We’ve done something interesting with it.
Watch out.
